The Southern Foodways Alliance, a University of Mississippi nonprofit devoted to preserving Southern food traditions, has a new spiral bound community cookbook out. Several Triangle folks contributed to its creation. Below are promotional two events:
– 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, an open house with contributors on the patio outside Flyleaf Books and Foster’s Market, 752 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill. Free and open to the public.
– 4 pm, Sunday, Oct. 17, a cookbook release party with contributors April McGreger of Farmer’s Daughter and local cooking instructor Sheri Castle at 3Cups, 227 S. Elliott Rd., Chapel Hill. It costs $40 with copy of cookbook, $25 for food and wine only.
The menu includes boiled peanuts, shrimp paste and benne seed biscuits, Coca-Cola brisket sliders, pickled okra, crowder peas with corn dumplings, Carolina muddle and various cakes and pies to help ponder the eternal debate about which is better.
Cake vs. Pie — various prized Southern desserts to help us ponder the eternal debate.
